How do you sew a pocket on a shirt? Adding a pocket to a shirt can not only enhance its functionality but also add a touch of personal style. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sewer, following these simple steps will help you sew a pocket on a shirt like a pro.

First, choose the type of pocket you want to add. There are several types of pockets, including patch pockets, welt pockets, and princess seams. Each type has its own unique style and method of construction. For this tutorial, we’ll focus on adding a patch pocket, which is one of the most common and simplest types of pockets to sew.

1. Gather your materials: Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials, including the shirt you want to add the pocket to, fabric for the pocket, thread, pins, a sewing machine, and scissors.

2. Measure and cut the pocket fabric: Measure the desired size of the pocket and add a seam allowance. Cut out the fabric for the pocket front and back, as well as any additional pieces needed for the pocket facing or interfacing.

3. Prepare the pocket pieces: If you’re using interfacing, fuse it to the wrong side of the pocket fabric. If you’re using a pocket facing, cut it to the same size as the pocket front and back, and press it in half lengthwise with wrong sides together.

4. Attach the pocket to the shirt: Pin the pocket to the shirt, positioning it where you want it to be. Make sure the right sides of the fabric are facing each other. Sew around the pocket edges, leaving a small opening for turning.

5. Turn the pocket right side out: Use a knitting needle or a chopstick to push the pocket edges through the opening, turning it right side out. Press the pocket flat with an iron.

6. Topstitch the pocket: Topstitch around the pocket edges, close to the seam, to secure the pocket in place and give it a finished look.

7. Attach the pocket facing (optional): If you’re using a pocket facing, pin it to the right side of the shirt, covering the raw edges of the pocket. Sew around the pocket edges, then turn the facing under and press it flat. Topstitch the facing in place.

Now you have successfully sewn a pocket on a shirt! This simple addition can transform a plain shirt into a stylish and practical piece. With practice, you can experiment with different pocket styles and add them to various garments to suit your needs and preferences.
